144 MHz Coax Dipole

Used parts:

  • RG-58 coax – min. 1,5m length
  • PVC pipe 3/4″
  • 3/4″ cap
  • 3/4″ pipe tee
  • UC-1 connector

Dipole is made from coax cable (RG-58).

Top section (460mm) – center coax conductor without shielding and isolation.

Bottom section – coax cable with shield and isolation (450mm) and 9 turns on the air core – diameter 3/4″.

The top and bottom section transition should be secured with heat shrink to prevent the shield from water access.

The dipole can be inserted into an enclosure, for example, PVC pipe. The air choke can be done outside the pipe then. Antenna in the enclosure will be more reliable and weather resistant, but much heavier. If you want to make an easy deployable, lightweight and portable antenna, you need to choose a simple coax cable version – it can be rolled up and packed into a backpack.
